Travel Around The World

what can be more beautiful than visiting places that we only dreamed of ?

Mount Olympus August 5, 2010

Summer trekking on Olympus Mountain! The weather was great and not a single cloud could hide the unspeakable beauty of the mountain of the Gods.

We decided to follow a round route in order to walk to as many paths of mount Olympus as possible.

The trekking started Friday night from “Prionia” towards “Zolota’s Refuge”. At the silent path we were accompanied only by few fireflies.

With the first Saturday morning sunlight we started climbing at the “Kofto” path, with the ageless glacier.  The tearing down of the chamois was a pleasant and unexpected surprise.

At the “Plateau of the Muses” is Chr. Kakalos Refuge with the exquisite view to “Stefani”. Hundreds meter higher is the refuge G. Apostolidis.

We followed the path under the “Stefani” and we arrived at “Mytikas Louki”, a rocky climbing path, well signed, that leaded us to the higher point of our country.

The view from Mytikas peak is unique to all directions. The peaceful view of the sea is conflicting with the wild beauty of the rock at “Kazania”.

We started descending from the passage of “Kakia Skala”, a unique rocky creation of the nature, that drives you through the peaks to the “Zonaria” path.

Sleeping over at the “Plateau of the Muses” is a unique experience. In Kakalos’ refuge there is a overnight stay ability, and there is a kitchen open all day. Around the refuge is  plenty of space to set up a tent.

The next morning the clouds started ascending at Gods’ mountain and we decided to return back, through the “Zonaria” path.  The pour rocky plantation, started to become richer as we got closer to Zolotas’ refuge, and the colorful  grassland was covered by the magisterial robola.

After a small break at the refuge we continued the descending to Prionia.

Until next time… Enjoy the mountains!

Astraka Refuge November 9, 2009

The last sunny days of October were the perfect oppurtunity to enjoy the heights of Tymfi, before the snow
covers them. The conditions were ideal for walk, the clouds were minimal and only in the morning hours, and the evening breeze reminded us that in the mountain winter comes always earlier.

The renewed warm and hospitable refuge, is a perfect stop for tea or coffee. The kitchen is open all day not only for those who stay in the refuge but also for the passing trekkers. The view from the shelter is unique. Astraka, the path of Drakolimni, the fringes of Gamila, all of them can be seen from the refuge’s balcony.
The refuge is open from May through October but for more information you can visit the site or communicate with Giorgos Rokas, who is in charge of the refuge.

Starting from the village up to the refuge you will find four springs with crystal water. The path is clearly marked with frequent labelling and constitutes ideal start for the beginners. The region is a beloved destination for many trekkers while nature’s pictures alternate by the seasons and offer unique experiences.

Kastoria’s Lake March 29, 2009

On of the most beautiful wintry landscapes is also the lake of Kastoria. Covered under the fog’s veil it gleams shyly every morning. The boats are stand rest and the only sound that can be heard are the flutter of the lake’s daily visitors that are taken off by its frozen surface.

a moment..

a moment..

What can be more beautiful than a walk in the stone alleys of the villages, a walk at the Refuge of Astraka, at Drakolimni (Dragonlake) with its little residents, or at the top of Gamila Mountain waiting for the moment that the clouds will be dissolved in order to reveal to us a glance in the greatness of nature… And for those who prefer to relax the traditional rooms of Nikos’ and Ioulia’s, with the splendid view, in Papigo constitutes the best solution. Warm environment, smiley people, splendid foods and abundant raki…

Autumn Excursions in Greece October 8, 2008

Autumn is the ideal season for small excursions in Greece. There are many places to visit. Ipiros’ villages and especially Zagorochoria, are the most popular destination the past few years. Although many hotels and farms were built to suit the traveler, the villages kept the local colour and their tradition, giving us the chance to escape from our every day life.

The day can be spent peacefully by visiting the villages around, quiet walks by Aoo or Voidomati river, or enjoy a Greek coffee in a local cafe. A beautiful site to visit is the “stone pools”, a very beautiful shaping of nature that connects Megalo and Mikro Papigo

For those who want to enjoy an easy trekking good choice is the path by river Voidomati. It begins at the bridge (in the street Konitsa – Ioannina) and ends in the bridge after the village of Aristi. A popular route is also the path to “Moni Stomiou”. The path starts at the stone bridge of Aoos and reaches up to the monastery (Moni Stomiou) with the imposing view in the canyon of Aoos. All the paths have labels with information about the time needed for the different itineraries.

For the mountaineers the region offers a multitude of choices. The path to the shelter of Papigo constitutes the most frequent destination and the nearest. From the shelter you can walk up to Drakolimni, to Gamila and Astraka. These paths are more exigent but reward each effort. The shelter doesn’t operate all the time during winter. Before starting your trekking it is necessary to contact the supervisor of the shelter and check also for the availability of beds.

Zagorochoria is a great place for cyclists. They can find from easy to difficult routes to practice their passion.

For those who want to live extreme moments, rafting is the easiest way. Here also the difficulties vary. For beginning exceptional choice is Voidomatis river, with the splendid landscape and its dark and light blue color. The difficulties increase in Arachthos river, which is located in Tzoumerka (between Ioannina and Arta). The river shows unique beauty, the landscapes appear more imposing and fulfill the most exigent visitor. The rafting excursions are organized by local companies of alternative tourism that have their base in the region.

And at the end of the day a shot of raki in the distillery or somewhere else with some local tidbits is the best way to finish the day.

I am waiting to hear from you for places you visit, or you would like to visit during autumn.

October is  the most beautiful month in our country for  mountainous tours. The temperature is pleasant and allows us to  enjoy all day-long excursions and relaxing moments , in evening, in front of the fireplace. The nature has unique colors that change every day. We can see  yellow and green leaves but also orange and deep red, all in the same landscape. I think these can be some of the most beautiful pictures that we can capture with our photo lenses.
